The Best Time for a Fortress Day Trip from Khiva

The hour matters more than the month. The fortress sites are open desert with little shade, so the days leave either at dawn or in the afternoon for the sunset. Dawn: the sites before the heat

Khiva Advanture’s car day leaves at 6:00 AM and, at 6 hours, has you back in Khiva about noon. In summer, a start around 6:00 to 7:00 AM is the one to aim for on the longer lake and camel day too, before the heat makes climbing and walking around the fortresses harder.

There is a second reason to go early. A traveller who started at 6:00 AM in October 2026 wrote of fine light for photographs and of being almost alone at the sites.

Sunset: Ayaz-Kala at the end of the day

Ayaz-Kala stands on high ground with open desert below it, and the afternoon trips are built around its sunset. Khiva Advanture’s sunset and dinner trip sees Toprak-Kala, Kyzyl-Kala and Akchakul Lake first and reaches Ayaz-Kala as the sun goes down, with dinner near the yurt camp afterwards at your own cost. Sunset timing varies by season, so pick the afternoon start for your date in its calendar; it can also drop you at Urgench Airport for an evening flight. For the sunset at Ayaz-Kala, leave Khiva around 2:00 to 3:00 PM: Islambek Travel & Hotels, Khiva’s lake and camel day has a 2:00 PM sunset option with stargazing and dinner at the yurt camp.

The months

We found no official guidance on the best months, so here is only what the tours themselves show. Khiva Advanture’s car day was on sale on every date we read, in November and December 2026 and in April and May 2027. Reviews from July 2026 talk about the heat at the sites, and for winter, warm clothing is on the kit list for Asli Travel’s fortress transfers. The cotton picking on Islambek Travel & Hotels’ days is seasonal, and its two-day trip places it in autumn.
